Iacocca Family Foundation-Type 1 Diabetes Research Grants-Due February 1
The Iacocca Family Foundation will be accepting grant applications to support innovative and promising diabetes research programs and projects that will lead to a cure for type 1 diabetes.
Healthcare Innovation Program/ACTSI Seed Grant RFP-LOI Due February 15
The Emory/Georgia Tech Healthcare Innovation Program (HIP), in partnership with the ACTSI, is pleased to invite research seed grant proposals in Healthcare Innovation. The seed grant program will fund multi-investigator, multidisciplinary teams examining healthcare services and clinical effectiveness. Preliminary Study grants and Complete Project grants will be offered. A NEW RFA is available here.
Pilot Grants Available for Parkinson's Disease Research-Due February 15
The Udall Parkinson's Disease Center and the Emory Parkinson’s Disease Collaborative Center for Environmental Research have funds available for one-year pilot project grants. Six pilot awards between $25,000-$35,000 will be funded. Applicants can be Emory faculty or postdoctoral fellows (including residents and clinical fellows).
Exploratory/Developmental Bioengineering Research Grants (R21)-Due February 16
This funding opportunity encourages innovation and high risk/impact bioengineering research in new areas. The research proposed under this program can explore approaches and concepts new to a particular substantive area; research and development of new technologies, techniques or methods; or initial research and development of data upon which significant future research may be built.
2012 Emory+Children's Pediatric Research Pilot Funding Program-Due March 1
The pilot opportunities focus on seeding collaborative efforts that link primary faculty investigators who are on the medical staff of Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta or are faculty members of the Emory Department of Pediatrics to investigators with related interests including those in other departments at Emory and at other institutions within the State of Georgia.

Educational Opportunities
Certificate Program in Translational Research
Applications are currently being accepted for Fall 2012. As part of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute “Med into Grad” Initiative, the Emory Laney Graduate School is now offering a Certificate Program in Translational Research. Applicants must be PhD graduate students in the biomedical sciences and/or biomedical engineering at Emory, Morehouse School of Medicine, and Georgia Tech and with an interest in obtaining training in translational research.
Request for Applications-Master of Science in Clinical Research
Applications are being accepted for the Master of Science in Clinical Research (MSCR) degree program for classes beginning in August 2012. The Emory MSCR is part of the Research Education, Training & Career Development (RETCD) program of the ACTSI. The MSCR provides didactic and mentored clinical and/or translational research training. The MSCR program is designed for participants who hold a doctorate or equivalent degree (such as physicians including fellows and junior faculty and PhD-level scientists including postdoctoral fellows and junior faculty) and have demonstrated a commitment to a career in clinical investigation that incorporates clinical and/or translational research.

Third Annual Academic & Industry Intersection Conference: Commercialization of Discoveries

University investigators and industry executives have been searching for a place to learn how to collaborate. This conference, hosted by the ACTSI and Georgia Bio, will provide examples on how universities and industry can effectively work together. The program includes stories of successful academic/industry partnerships and the announcement of a new state-wide pilot award sponsored by the Georgia Research Alliance. The half-day conference will be held at the Emory Conference Center.

The 7th International Symposium on Biomechanics in Vascular Biology & Cardiovascular Disease-April 26-27
This annual symposium, sponsored by the ACTSI, brings together engineers, life scientists, physical scientists and clinicians to examine the role of biomechanics in cardiovascular disease. The conference includes oral presentations, poster session and young investigator awards. Abstracts are due on February 10.

Allan Levey is the inaugural holder of the Betty Gage Holland Chair in Neurology in the medical school at Emory. The Jim Cox Jr. Foundation established the chair. Holland, who died in 2004, was married to Cox, who presided over Cox Enterprises until his death in 1974. Cox's nephew, James Kennedy, and his wife, Sarah, recently gave $5 million to Emory for Alzheimer's research. Levey directs the Emory Alzheimer's Disease Research Center and chairs neurology. Psychologist Ben Hampstead is working with Allan Levey, chair of neurology, on an NIH-funded grant to identify the memory systems involved in spatial navigation in Alzheimer's disease patients. The study uses functional magnetic resonance imaging to examine activity in the hippocampus.
Should Patents on Pharmaceuticals Be Extended to Encourage Innovation?
Salary Cap Change
Effective December 24, 2011, the salary cap for individuals funded via DHHS grants and other extramural funding mechanisms has been reduced from Executive Level I of the Federal Executive Pay Scale ($199,700 in 2011) to Executive Level II ($179,700). Agencies that fall under the DHHS umbrella include: NIH, AHRQ, CDC, HRSA, SAMHSA. For more information regarding the NIH guidance, click here.
