Emory Alzheimer's Disease Research Center Pilot Grants Available-Due January 2

The NIA-funded Emory Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center (ADRC) has funds available for pilot project grants of up to $35,000 in direct costs. Grants focused on mild cognitive impairment, Alzheimer’s disease or related neurodegenerative diseases are being sought. Appropriate areas of research for pilot studies range from basic and clinical investigations to education and caregiving research. Studies of early interventions, imaging and biomarkers and minority issues encouraged. Emory, Morehouse School of Medicine and GA Tech investigators are encouraged to apply.

SPORE in Head and Neck Cancer Developmental Research and Career Development Programs-Due December 5

The SPORE in Head and Neck Cancer is soliciting new proposals for the Developmental Research and Career Development Programs. The Career Development Program is designed to provide training and guidance for academic physician-scientists, clinician-investigators and laboratory-based scientists who wish to dedicate their efforts to translational research in the areas of diagnosis, imaging, prevention, treatment and improvement in quality of life in head and neck cancer. This program is open to Emory investigators only. The Developmental Research Program seeks to identify new research opportunities and to increase the number of investigators engaged in translational research for head and neck cancer by supporting meritorious proposals that might expand into full research projects in the future. This program is open to investigators outside of Emory University.

Predictive Multi-scale Models for Biomedical, Biological, Behavioral, Environmental and Clinical Research (U01)-LOI Due January 1

The NIH, DOE, FDA and NSF recognize that to efficiently and effectively address the challenges of understanding multi-scale biological and behavioral systems, researchers will need predictive, computational models that encompass multiple biological and behavioral scales. This FOA also encourages the development of new, non-standard modeling methods and experimental approaches to facilitate multi-scale modeling.

Partnerships for Innovation-LOI Due January 4

The NSF Partnerships for Innovation program is an umbrella for two complementary subprograms: Building Innovation Capacity, which emphasizes the transformation of knowledge to market-accepted innovations created by the research and education enterprise and Accelerating Innovation Research, which emphasizes the translation of research to commercialization by NSF-funded research alliances.

NIH Undergraduate Design Challenge-Submission Period January 3-May 26

A competition for undergraduate students to foster the design and development of innovative diagnostic and therapeutic devices, and technologies to aid underserved populations and the disabled is being sponsored by the National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering (NIBIB), part of the NIH. One winning student team will be selected for each of three challenge categories: diagnostic devices/methods; therapeutic devices/methods; and technology to aid underserved populations and individuals with disabilities.

Joint Advocacy Coalition Responds to NIH Call for Comments on Future Biomedical Research Workforce

NIH released a notice calling for input to the advisory committee to the NIH Director on the Future Biomedical Research Workforce. SCTS submitted a response as part of the Joint Advocacy Coalition. The response provided an opportunity to support the greatly needed continued education of translational scientists and clinicians.

A Presidential Memorandum Accelerating Products from the Science Lab to the Market Place was recently released by the Obama Administration. Federal agencies with research departments are encouraged by the White House to hasten the transfer of science and engineering breakthroughs from the laboratory to the market place. The memo outlines specific actions for executive departments and agencies to improve the results from its technology transfer and commercialization activities.
