When the Mind Takes Leave
In the century since German physician Alois Alzheimer discovered Alzheimer's disease, scientists have made many advances and discoveries. However, researchers have not been able to find a cure or even a terribly effective treatment. "The treatments we have now for Alzheimer's are Band-Aids," says Emory neurologist and ACTSI investigator James Lah. "They treat symptoms but don't touch the underlying pathology. At best, they slow the progression of a disease that typically spans a decade by about six months."
