Open RFPs
The National Center for Research Resources has awarded Emory University, Morehouse School of Medicine and Georgia Institute of Technology a grant entitled Atlanta Clinical and Translational Science Institute (ACTSI). The ACTSI utilizes the complementary strengths of Emory University, Morehouse School of Medicine, Georgia Institute of Technology and other institutions (Kaiser Permanente, Children's Healthcare of Atlanta, Georgia Research Alliance, and the Department of Veteran Affairs) to promote the discipline of clinical and translational science and to improve the healthcare of the residents in the metro-Atlanta area. An important component of this award is represented by a pilot projects program.
ACTSI pilot project grants are specifically intended to facilitate the acquisition of extramural support for new and expanded research efforts in clinical and translational research. Pilot projects will be defined as eligible if they fulfill one or more of the following criteria:
- Human research, including observational, interventional investigations and systematic clinical trials
- Application of pre-clinical laboratory discoveries to human research
- Adoption and translation of best practices in healthcare to the community setting
- Application or translation of community-based participatory research principles and practices to address a clinical/translational research question
- The research proposal addresses an important aspect of minority health or ethnic health disparity in the region
Successful PiCoTraCs project applications will describe cross-cutting, multi-disciplinary proposals of sufficient scope to qualify as a stand-alone research effort and should be well integrated into the broader activities of the ACTSI. They should incorporate emerging technologies and new approaches across the range of translational research efforts from basic science to community-based research. A major goal of the PiCoTraCs Program is to encourage interdisciplinary clinical and translational research by two target groups: young researchers in these fields who have not yet received significant NIH or other extramural funding, and seasoned investigators either entering the clinical and translational field for the first time or exploring a new direction in that arena.
The research awards will be made with the expectation that the preliminary support provided by the pilot grant will lead to expanded applications for additional external funding. Indeed, the identification of proposed extramural funding sources and defined grant mechanisms will be a requirement for funding through the ACTSI. Applicants should specify the type of award and funding agency to which they plan to submit the expanded proposal. Applicants are encouraged to utilize the CRC/ACTSI resources that are useful for proposal development (e.g., biostatistics consultation).
